Tripod bowl
A cup-shaped top, usually 75 or 100 mm, that takes a leveling head. You level the rifle in the bowl without adjusting the legs.
What it means
Instead of a flat platform with a stud, some tripods have a bowl: a round cup, sized 75 mm or 100 mm, that a half-ball leveling head sits in. Loosen the knob underneath, tilt the head level, tighten. Many bowl tripods also come with a flat platform you can swap in for a standard 3/8-16 head (Leofoto’s LM series ships with both).
What it changes in the field
Leveling in the bowl takes seconds and keeps the rifle from canting, which helps on uneven ground. A 100 mm bowl takes larger, stiffer heads; a 75 mm bowl is lighter and more common.
What to look for
- Bowl size matching the leveling head you want.
- Whether a flat platform is included for standard heads.
How we use it on this site
Tripod pages give the bowl size when the maker publishes one.
